Psychiatric Committee
The Psychiatric Committee has been set up as a continual watchdog for those who suffer a so-called 'mental illness' because of various circumstances. It monitors those who are administered harsh medications requiring constant and strict supervision. Many psychiatrists/GP's also refer their patients to us for support and friendship.
Members are encouraged by the Committee to require accountability and affordability from their doctors/psychiatrists. This can be achieved mainly by asking questions, including why they are administered such harsh medications, what are potential side effects, what other treatments and medicines are available and what type of supervision is needed. Members are reminded that the physician is there to serve the patient, not the other way around. The Committee will also recommend other physicians if a Member feels they are not getting the help they need and deserve.
The Psychiatric Committee supports in other ways Members who suffer from a 'mental illness.' The Committee helps those who are suffering from isolation, injustice, and abuse, as well as helping to prevent having their rights taken away from them. We want to encourage Members to speak out, to make known what it is they want, rather than letting others tell Members what is best for them. Accountability is the major goal for the Committee; it is vital that other community groups work together with us to prevent any abuses that may occur to Members.
